I'm glad you found my website. This database has two goals:

I have created a collection of six types of "choreography elements":

If you select one of these from the list at the top of the page, it will take you to a page where you can see all of the other "choreography elements" that match well with the selected element.

Please add new elements, variations, alternative names, and matches to the database!

Because this database is new, there is a lot missing in terms of content. At first it might look like there's a lot there, but take a closer look and you'll find that plenty of things are not there yet. Please add a few! I especially need new rhythms and things they work with. Also, when you add something, I encourage you add things it works with too.

If you would like to contribute a photo or audio clip, you can e-mail it to . I will compress images if they are too large. Please send audio clips in a compressed format (such as MP3, Windows Media, or Real Audio), and keep audio clips to 15 seconds or less. If you send a longer clip, I'll choose a few seconds of it. If the photo or audio clip is already hosted on another web server, you can simply submit its URL in the "add photo" or "add audio clip" areas.

This site is also not meant to teach anyone how to dance. It assumes that you already know what all of the moves are and how to execute them. The purpose of the description is to provide a reminder of what each move is and to provide some additional information that may be interesting or helpful. If you would like to learn how to dance, try websearching for dance teachers in your area. Or visit Shira.net, my favorite resource for middle eastern dancers.

I would like to extend my special thanks to Jeff Senn, whose website A Practical Introduction to Middle Eastern Drumming was the source of much of my initial rhythm information, including his HTML-readable rhythm notation. His new website is even better!
